about

September is my birth month. I have four immediate family members and several close friends who also share this month and astrological identity. Every year at this time, you can hear car horns blaring on the streets as Mexicano, Chicano, Latinx people celebrate their independence from Spain, specifically México for me (September 16th, 1810 - September 27th, 1821). It was a revolutionary civil war that lasted years. The indigenous stewards of the land against the invading conquistadores. Aztec and Mayan spirit Gods against the European expansion of culture and religion was a calamity.

I spent half my childhood in Tlaltenango. When I travelled Spain to visit Erin in Madrid, and Aaron in Barcelona, I took in all the history I could. It was my pilgrimage. The more I learned, the more I felt the visceral shame of the invader's history and conversely proud of the resilient indigenous peoples who fought for their independence. Why did I feel this? I came from both. Over the years the combining cultures became known as Mestizo. I am that combination of the two.

These songs express some of my thoughts during this process. It was cathartic to record these tunes and explore the vibes, the instrumentation, and finally the lyrics. I hope you can enjoy it and reflect with me. This is the RAZA Cumbia Mixtape EP.

¡Que viva México!
