Fabia (feat. Rene Lemus from LVDP)

about

FABIA expresses the duress I've felt as an oppressed person in America. I am a first generation American born of an immigrant family from Tlaltenango, Zacatecas MX. I've experienced the paradox of second rate freedom and the American dream. What does that mean? Ask any POC what it is like to translate for their parents when they are kids. Ask them about learning cultural differences by awkward chance at early ages. Ask them about being treated systematically differently because of how they look, or the language they speak, or their cultural values and history. Second rate citizens? America is comprised of people with a history that feel this way. However! My parents came to the land of opportunity, worked hard and provided a better life for their children. The American dream was fulfilled with us, yet here we are, watching decisive politicians divide instead of unify over the last few terrible years in the United States.

This track is about raising your voice, however big or small you think your voice is. It attacks the oppressor while self-deprecating one's self for not doing anything about it. The lyrics say: "Resist! Endure! Work. Get paid shit for your time. Go cry about it with Fabia." Who is Fabia? You tell me! Everyone has a confidant. Who is your Fabia?

I had the concept for this song as a repeating coro and I heard the words evolving, but I wasn't sure where to take it. Enter another awesome legend from the Chicago live music scene, Rene Lemus for Los Vicios de Papa.

Rene is incredibly great with his band and I wanted to collaborate with him on a track that was akin to what both of our bands share: a rebellious disposition on modern politics and self consciousness.

He came into the studio and we worked out all the verses and coro lyrics together. Taking a serious vibe and finding the humor was comforting. I was also blessed to have Kevin Miller join us on saxophone and Dan and Lu join in for the group vocals.

This one is dedicated to all those voting on the right side of history on November 4th.

Aguanta, resiste, aguanta, me quitan el tiempo con chamba

Luchando por lo nuestro mirando así al futuro
